Happy New Year!

New Year was a fun time this turn of the year for our family. Due to illness of all varieties (dubbed the Quillen Plague by my brother in law) we scrapped our plans for our now traditional chocolate-fountain with family (we were planning on sharing our cheese tradition with the family too) and settled for a quiet evening.

We DID buy cheese, and counted down early with some sparkly juice and then put the girls to bed at a somewhat normal hour.
Korrali enjoyed the fruit, the chocolate (our ode to a chocolate fountain), the bread, and the crackers. I thought for sure she would like at least 1 of the cheeses. We didn't mind having to eat it all ourselves.

After bed time we played a cross-country game of Pandemic. It's pretty much my new favorite game. We have awesome relations who don't mind the time zone difference once in a while to stay up late and play games with us across facetime. I had to steal their picture because we were very lax in our memory recording. Did I mention my sister in law was practically in labor the entire game? She's amazing.

We watched the ball drop on their TV.
Happy New Year!

Also, my cousin-in-law (why yes, I am positive that is the actual name for it!) made these studly Jayne hats. There are actually two, but Korrali wanted to wear one (it's really sized for Claire) and I wanted to let her!

if only this baby agreed to wear hats! she's like a little smurf. so snuggable.

Christmas Season

We had a wonderful Christmas Season - we took part in the #LighttheWorld thing and it lightened our own season significantly. It did mean that some things got left until a little extra late :our christmas cards; which are still coming heh: but we also made some great memories.

We went to the Zoo and saw their lights. It was pretty special.

We did the Santa there, and didn't get super great ones of Claire and Santa for first Santa but it was a really fun experience.

we made a gingerbread stable.

K's gram gram (the name is her invention) helped her make a very adorable house out of graham crackers and an ice cream cone

Christmas came around and we had decided to open presents Christmas Eve morning. We figured the girls wouldn't mind, and then we could just not worry about the craziness of 8:30 am church on Sunday.. and we could just play all day on Saturday with our new stuff! We loved how it worked out.
Claire got some kitchen food in a reindeer bag

Korrali got this trampoline

Big Foot became a Christmas ornament

Korrali and Claire got this kitchen, and Korrali got 2 adorable aprons and some new dishes.

The girls also received tons of new books, some new clothes (korrali got footie pjs which she has worn every night since, except for the one they were being washed after being thrown up on), and Claire got a drum and music set. The hours and hours of happy play time and sister bonding time as a result of the new Christmas toys have been my best gift of all.

This was our best family photo for Christmas. Well, unless you count our zombie one. Still to come.
Merry Christmas!

Kitchen

I am so excited about a project we made for the girls for Christmas! Backstory: We finally got JD a new desk to fit with his new job tasks, and then "had" to find something to do with his old falling apart one. Ok, I had been itching to try a pinterest diy, and J agreed to help me =D. It did mean we had to finally re-sell the kitchen we had used for years.. it was kind of a wrench, but this was so much fun!

If you look at it upside down you can see the part of the desk that we used.. the shelving part.
K helped me choose the colors.
Over the summer K helped me paint the top (we used scrap wood from the play house that JD built over the summer), and then I painted the cabinets and fridge door. I found a damaged can of magnetic paint at home depot, so I bought it for cheap and used it to death on the fridge door so it can eventually hold really strong magnets.

I sourced the knobs from a lucky-find washing machine by the dumpster and cleaned them off thoroughly.

Hinges, magnetic closures, and the fridge handle K helped me choose at home depot.

Then I asked JD to help me put it all together! He screwed the legs on, the top on, the fridge door on with hinges, the fridge handle on, an the magnetic closure to the fridge inside, and drilled holes for the knobs to turn.

Once it was cleaned off, I stuck on some contact paper from the Dollar Tree to make it look like a stone counter top. Then I sewed together the stove with fabric, some seat foam, some vinyl, and then made a flap that can open up to replace the LED pushlights under the burners. I glued large buttons to the bottoms of the two stove knobs and added button holes so they could turn as well. It was kind of a beast because I'm not really into following patterns, so I kind of had to make it up as I went along but it turned out very functional.

Then the stove was velcroed to the counter top, and cookies were placed in the cookie jar... and the other new food I made went in different containers under the Christmas tree. The cupboard on the right as you look at it is a dishwasher, and has a little bin for dishes. The other one is an oven and will use a freezer organizer as an oven rack.

It was even more fun watching K stock the kitchen, and it's actually fun to play with her with it, and stock it for her!

Here it is again, full..

The girls love it. C learned to pull herself up to her knees on it. It has plenty of storage for all the dishes and aprons and food. My favorite part is that the stove velcroes off, and I have major plans for it as a backdrop for other imaginary realms..perhaps a grocery store or a sweet shoppe, a food cart or restaurant, a dr office.. who knows!

2016 in Quotes

J: Apparently we got engaged 9 years ago today (thanks Google!)
L: Best lie ever
(I may or may not have lured Lianna to the beach for a romantic picnic dinner under false pretenses.)

J: Korrali are you a muggle?
K: no!
Me: a muggle is a person without magical powers. We are all muggles.
K: no I'm not! I have magic it's from the trees. Woosh.

L: another way of saying joking with you is pulling my leg. You're pulling my leg!
K: I'm not eating your leg! Wait.. I need to eat your leg :chomp:
L: ahh you're eating me ahh!

L: it came to pass that the chief judge was murdered and no one knew who did it.
K: but I know who did i t!
L: who?
K: it was... John!
L: maybe you're right-
K: John Jacob jingle heimer schmidt!!!

L: Hey, can you call me real quick?
J: Sure. Lianna, Lianna, Lianna, LIANNA!
L: ........Thanks, but I meant my phone.

Today k picked up a dead thistle stalk and said to me in her little lisping voice "mom, this is the kind of thing that does photosynthesis". I said "yes, when it is not dead." Then she ran and told her friend this cool fact. I have Rachel and the tree schoolers to thank for opening the door to that discussion, and a beautiful state to thank for reinforcing to an active little hiker with a mind like a sponge to that plants use photosynthesis to create their own energy. Im amazed at how her mind makes connections. I wish sometimes she made other connections ... Like i should do what mom says.. but i guess i can cut her some slack

Me: K why are you naked???
K: because I have no clothes on
Duh. Silly me

J: I'm going to bonus this month.
L: Great! Maybe we will one day buy a house!
J: Or I could buy a gun for my birthday. =)
L: But you already bought one for Claire's birthday
J: Exactly! (thinking this could be the start of a great tradition!)
L: Are we going to spend $500 on MY birthday present?
J: (chuckles in his mind... as if the gun would only cost $500)
J: Sure!
L: Just think, we could go on a great vacation instead.
J: ..... We'll talk about this later when you're much more tired and not in possession of all your faculties.

J: Hey Lianna, check it out! There had a sale going on: Buy one bag of carrots and get two cartons of ice cream for regular price!

K saw a video of new Caledonia, and there was a Caucasian guy wearing just swim trunks.
K"that's jesus! He got crucified!"
J"yes, he did! But..er... Um..(knowing the moment had passed to explain) Look the beach!"

L: I've heard it said that cleaning whilst raising children is like shoveling in a snow storm. I look around my place, and beg to differ. It's more like trying to towel dry standing in a downpour.

J: When shopping with toddlers, some families have to worry about tantrums, others about having the toddler wanting to buy one of everything. Us? We have to deal with a toddler hugging the mannequins. Every. Single. One.

LI almost made it to 30 without ever a bird targeting my head for its in flight facility. Almost.

Daniel tiger: do you want to make believe with me?
K: no thanks.
Every single time

JWhen Claire is not sick her hair sticks up. When she's sick, it lays flat.

Dora: who do we ask when we want to know where to go?
K: a grown up!
Me: very true. Who does Dora ask?
K: oh. The map!

My dog drank out of the toilet again. But the joke was on her; my 3 yr old had forgotten to flush.

What energetic phrase did k coin today? A: the Crumbs cycle B: m&mo acids or,C: cocoasynthesis?

K: mom, these are Franklins!
Me: those are ninja turtles
Ensue the story of the tmnt
K: oh. This is Franklin. He turned in to a ninja turtle

J: you have your tooth brush? I'm turning off your light because that means you got out of bed. (we have a deal worked out with her to help her stay in bed)
K: no, I have magic to get it! I do! I do!
Ok. Fine...
J:goodnight Korrali.

My brain: YES! My wife Lianna bought Hawaiian Sweet Rolls. I'm so lucky!
My hand: Reaches for the bag
Orange bag in the fridge: Sorry, I'm not Hawaiian Sweet Rolls. I am a giant bag of carrots.
My heart: You... you deceiving, low down, dirty... deceiver!
My body: Crumples to the floor, whimpering like a democrat responding to Trump's election victory
Usually ks daddy is really up on toddler stuff but he and I had a good laugh this morning..
Daddy with the patience of job: she wants me to guess which princess she is and I guessed like 14 princesses and she keeps saying 'one more guess' ah!
I walk in to the room, k is wearing a Cinderella dress.
Me assuming she is teasing: didn't daddy guess Cinderella?
Her giggling patiently at her parents folly: no! He said sleeping beauty though!
Me: did you guess Cinderella?
Daddy: yes, see! I said aurora! Or, is aurora sleeping beauty....
Me: yes, Cinderella is actually Cinderellas name
Bahaha! I'm seriously impressed he knew 14 princesses though

K: daddy, where did you come from?
Me: where is daddy from?
K:yes, where did we find him?
Me: he was born, from Grammy . then he grew up, just like you are. Then he went to school, where he met me.
K: oh! I must have been in your belly.
Me: not yet, you were still in heaven cheering that we met. You had to wait a while, before you could come.
K:ohhh! Ok.
I love hearing her think!

L:tonight's dinner will be broccoli cheddar soup.
Joe: without the broccoli right?
Lianna: no, without the cheddar.
Joe: oh I forgot.... I'm fasting.
Lianna: until dessert?
Joe: yes.

My daughter went into her bathroom, then called for me. I thought she needed the light on, but she stopped me. Then she shut the door to barely a crack and whispered in a ghostly voice "I'm Nocturnal"

Claire:
Joe:
Claire:
Looks like Claire is a teaser.

Joe: Korrali, do you know where the Cheerios are?
Korrali: No. Maybe in the cupboard?
Joe: No, they're not there. Maybe I should just have chocolate chips for breakfast?
Korrali: Ya, probably....
We were at Target yesterday. When it came time to leave, I had to carry Korrali since she was SOOOO distracted by everything. As we're walking up to the front to check out, she whispers in my ear "Are we leaving this magical place?"

Zoo

We have a pass to the zoo.. and I'm trying really hard to make it worthwhile haha. Anyway, our zoo is kind of cool because you can...
Feed the giraffes! For the low, low price of 5 dollars for two handfuls of romain lettuce. It's completely worth it.

I want to take a picture! By the almost life sized giraffe sculptures.. "Mom, I want HER to take my picture!" You didn't say I couldn't too...

Elephant Sculpture, sitting on foot.

Sitting on trunk

climbing through baby elephant trunk. We also got to watch the elephants: poop, pee, and take a bath given by the keepers. It blew Korrali's mind. "Mom, I like to watch animals poop."

You get to pet the Wallabys!! We totally did. Not in this picture. But on video. Even Claire did. They are so soft. Think like Akita soft.

Little girl eaten by massive crock as she mistakes its mouth for chair.

Animal enrichment includes giving a kleenex box with meat at the bottom to the wildcat. Hilarious.

Claire loved the animals. After I made her pet the wallaby she reached her hand out to every single other fluffy one and smiled and called out. The wolves were even identified as "Dawh" - what she calls our dog. This, however was the moose. She tried to climb out of the ergo and go to the moose. Girl after my own heart.

Fire Station

We took cookies and a card to the fire station again, and had a tour. This time we did it as part of our pre-school co-op! They were so nice, and I learned a lot. Did you know that some engines have lots of hoses plus water tanks? Others have ladders, tools, and one hose that must attach to an outside water source. These two usually respond together to a house fire. Otherwise, the second kind sually shows up first. Others are smaller, carry water and fire retardant and have 4 wheel drive to fight forest fires. When you call 911 usually the fire department gets there first!
"Do you want to see these? They are like huge scissors! We cut cars or doors open if we need to with them to save people!" The kids asked tons of questions (mostly "whats that? can we see this?") and he answered them all in a way they could understand. Also I'm pretty sure no wasn't even in his vocabulary. "Can I touch this?" "Yes! Let's pull it out!"

"Do you want to climb in and look around? Sit on the chairs?" Why yes, yes, they did.

Who wants to drive? Almost everyone, that's who.

"If you see us dressed in our outfits, and talking like this, don't be afraid ok? We want you to come say hi to us if we ever come to your house. So just run right up and say hi, ok?" "I won't be afraid! I'll come say hi!" My mommy heart was full of gratitude for their pro-active stance to rescue safety for kids.

Shopping

I love shopping with Korrali by ourselves. Look, mom! Ears!!!!!! Meow! Meow! Meow!
