We made a fabulous recipe for caramel apples. It was so good I added "have flourishing Apple tree" to my bucket list. Korrali ate probably her weight in caramel.. Well a lot anyway, between helping and snacking and sneaking more! Then I tried to make her take a nap. Hahaha..... I felt like a rooky but a happy, caramelly one!

One Year
But I have many, many memories. It has taken a long time for me to process my experiences of last year, in the bits and fractions of time that I have had for introspection since I have honestly desired to look into my heart.
A year ago last month a good friend of ours passed through the veil after a long and arduous physical battle with cancer. The words of President Henry B. Eyring when speaking of his father who also battled cancer ring true for me -
“When the pain became intense, we found him in the morning on his knees by the bed. He had been too weak to get back into bed. He told us he had been praying to ask his Heavenly Father why he had to suffer so much when he had always tried to be good. He said a kindly answer came: ‘God needs brave sons.’
This is so true of our friend. I was given the opportunity for God to work through me as a massage therapist to strengthen him and give what small gift I had toward aiding his physical journey. I need to preface with the fact that my skill and training were not in the area which I gave to him. I have minimal energy work training, comparatively. I have always felt close to my intuition and compassion as a massage therapist, but I am not an energy healer. Over time I have understood that God has given me the privilege of helping his children through the gift of healing, but I had never used it as I did for him. I was allowed to experience something unique; a testimony to me that with God all things are possible to those who believe.
Mother's Day in October
October is breast cancer awareness month, and every year we can we join the Denver Race for the Cure. Last year we were unable to make it, but this year was great! For our family, it's more like a second Mother's Day because it commemorates another year that J's mom is cancer-free. She is such a wonderful example of love and giving. I think of all that would have been so different if she wasn't here and am so grateful that my children can take for granted that they have grandparents, and that my husband had such a healthy and wonderful family to grow up in. Thanks to her, so many people have been blessed!

| The sun dawned a brilliant pink; a beautiful reminder of hope and courage fitly dressed to celebrate the day. |

| A very, very pleased Korrali snuggled with her Grammy. |

| Claire was cold, hence the jacket headdress and blanket bundling. I can't blame her - it was early. |
Korrali loves her Grammy, so I need to say a few words about her, and our, feelings for this day. When we told Korrali our plans, she was so excited. She has two forms of excitement: crazy everywhere, and deep, focused goal achievement. In this case, it was the latter. She has a good understanding of what it means to have cancer, as a good friend of ours whom she knew as "Uncle Matt" passed away last year after fighting it. She spent quite a lot of time visiting with him with me, and it affected her profoundly to understand the her Grammy had once been sick with the same (though different type of) disease. She has been blessed with the ability to forget this year; up until a few months ago she remembered everyone and almost every place she had ever been - even places she went to before she could speak. Now she doesn't remember most of what happened in our last year - except for two things: the death of her "Uncle" Matt and the death of her best friend and pet, Teo. She didn't express very many feelings out loud, but I could tell from her behavior (quieter, very obedient, very thoughtful questions) that she was focusing to do what was necessary to be in a place to celebrate with us something that was important to her personally.
I can't speak for J, because I know he has his own very deep and personal feelings for his Mom and for being with her at a time that is important to her. Also if I delay this post to get him to record his thoughts I will probably never post, but look for an update here one day soon.
I can, however, speak for myself. Bonita came in to my life at a time when I was young, and feeling vulnerable and lonely. I was sensitive to relationships and in need of a close personal friendship with a mentor. My own heart was still raw when I met her; it was still a few years shy of healing from the ache of my own family's split. We lived with her, and I found my husband's mother was willing to take me as I was and love me as her own. Watching her care for her family and husband, though perhaps she didn't know I watched so closely, was exactly the nurturing I needed to renew my own faith in marital longevity. I know that mine is not the only heart she touched then, or through the years, or now, and that inspires me to be more loving, charitable, and thoughtful. Her life is a lesson in the power of one person's ability to influence one spot of the world for good, and the domino effect it has on the world as a whole. Life is precious. I look at her kind, generous, compassionate youngest son, and knowing that he is a miracle baby again renews my desire to dig in while I can and lift where I can.
Always when we walk together I remember my Aunt, whose story did not have a happy ending. I find my heart breaking for my cousins and uncle who miss her so terribly, and who have never quite recovered from the repercussions of losing her so young. I feel helpless because my life has been so far removed from theirs that there is next to nothing that I can do now that I am able to nurture and love them. It is as though we move in different Ven Circles, theirs labeled Long-Term Grief, and mine labeled Gratitude and the crossing between is too slim for a thin label called Trust and Hope. So celebration is a little bittersweet. I know that Race for the Cure represents only one of dozens of cancers, and though I am heartbroken by the pain of the several of my friends who suffer from them, I am SO glad that there is a space and time for celebration. Frankly, we - I - need a happy party for this. Happy, Happy 2nd Mother's Day!

End of Summer
![]() |
| We spent Labor Day at Grammy's! Look, two cute babies! Claire is 5 months older. And 3 lbs smaller.. or so... in this picture.. |
![]() |
| She was jumping and jumping in a rather frigid pool.. but that is one thing about SPD.. she just doesn't feel the cold very often. |
![]() |
| Claire sat in it for a few minutes and loved it! She loved being warm and snuggly too. |
![]() |
| We had a picnic dinner at the park. What, your family pics don't always look like this too? |
![]() |
| They have matching shirts! And they fit them at the same time which was a miracle! The company is TAJ, and if you think the designs are adorable let me know and I'll give you the company's number. |
Goat Fair
My brother Peter and my sister(in law) and their adorable children visited her family at the end of summer. Her family did 4H growing up, and they came mainly to support her little sister showing their family goats! I don't have photos of that, because I was watching children so they could watch her, but she did great! She was grand champion in Dairy and even got to participate in what they call "Round Robin" where the best of the show folk get to take turns showing the winning animals and a grand champion is chosen! Korrali and her adorable cousin got to pretend to show goats as well, Korrali was so excited for it all week long. It was such a cool adventure! Many, many thanks to my sister-in-laws family who helped us be a part of it!

| Ready to begin! |
![]() |
| They lead the goats around the circle, then out again. If there hadn't been so many people they probably would have asked them some cute questions like "what animal is that? Do you like goats?" |
![]() |
| We had to wait to begin because a lot of people who wanted to participate were watching a different event. The girls ate snacks and played on the bleachers. |
![]() |
| We waited a long time. Korrali made friends and built a sand cake/fort/castle... thing.. |
After the show we hit up the tiny carnival. They had a dragon that did lqaoops, a Ferris Wheel, and these 2 little kid rides. We stuck to the 2 little ones since I had Claire, but Korrali still mentions the carnival like this: "Look! A Wheel mom! I've never been on one .I wanted to go on one at the Goat Fair but you didn't let me."

They had animal barns for show animals and Korrali got to pet some of them, we saw all kinds of beautiful animals and just had a really fun time. It was so worth it that it has almost convinced me that one day when we settle down we may do 4H ourselves. Or maybe not. It was a lot of work just to show up.

New friend
We adopted a new friend, though the jury is out on whether we are keeping her because a dog is a lot of work. We like her, and sometimes we don't. She makes us giggle, and pull out hair out. She is sweet, and rather sassy at times. She adores the girls, but sometimes acts like a twin personality to Korrali which stirs things up quite nicely. She is a lab mix, and has a personality to prove it. For a family used to a Heeler mix this is very different. But yet we do love her.
Korrali especially loves her. "Mom, take our picture!"
First day
First day of preschool! We got together with some other moms in our ward and the kids just have a wonderful time playing together. The mom in charge recently said she was "really chill". That was an answer to my hearts prayer for her. I'm so glad she is enjoying it!
