I have washed the curtain before. I purposely bought a thicker one so that I COULD wash it and dry it on cool for short amounts of time without melting it. Voila, easy cleaning solution.
This time, it was getting mildewy and my inner cleaning lady started to nag the lazy me. The ensuing clash of the titans resulted in my throwing the curtain into the washer, (beautiful) and then into the dryer where I promptly forgot to turn the heat down, and left it in for way too long.
Result
Please note: it has shrunk about 1.5 feet in length, and melted to become about 3 feet in width. Hence the outer curtain is also in the tub to prevent floor puddles.
No cleaning kudos for me this time. Inner cleaning lady is hiding in embarrassment.

I just hang the wet curtain back up. Don't forget bleach, the Mighty mold killer. The other surprise is that just plain fabric will work as a shower curtain if the water isn't hitting it straight on. We have one that is just a sheet.
At least it's clean! PS--I'n not sure I've ever washed my shower curtain. Now, in my defense, since it's in the kids' bathroom it doesn't get used much, but after six years it could probably still use it!
I just buy them at the dollar store and throw them out when they are gross. Which I get around to doing every two or three years
